Let's talk about wall decoration for kids and especially about Murals.
You know that you can get them on wall paper, hand painted or stenciled. Are you artistic enough to buy a stencil kit? If so there are many available when you Google around. Prices are reasonable and the most explain how to apply them.
Wall paper murals are also available in different sizes and themes. You have to stick them on the wall though and this might not be the easiest thing to do. You definitely need help, depending on the size, and tips how to avoid folds. But it is an option which you can consider. Here are some important tips you should know.
Once you know what kinds of colors you are looking for, it is time to start thinking of what kind of wallpaper you would like to apply. The kind of wallpaper that is pre-pasted with tapestry glue will be much easier to apply and will be less messy as well. There are even reusable wallpapers, which stick to very smooth, clean walls and can be reapplied again and again. Before starting, remove all nails, fixtures, and switch plates. If the wall isn't smooth, fill any holes with spackling and sand any rough spots and the spackling once it is dry. If the wall has been previously papered, remove the old paper and wash the walls with detergent unless you can't remove the old paper. In that case, sand the edges or seams and apply an oil-based paint. If you find the wall isn't smooth, sand the wall, apply a coat of primer, and use a high quality water soluble indoor paint for the wall.
The wallpaper should hang straight so get a level to determine how to divide the space. Mark the guidelines with pencil. If your walls have decorative wood at the top and bottom of the wall, take these off to apply the wallpaper. You can then reapply the wooden head and foot boards to help give the room a more professional look. Meanwhile, measure the room and calculate how much wallpaper you will need. Then, cut the paper into the correct size from top to bottom, also making sure that the pattern will match up on adjacent strips. To ensure you will have enough wallpaper, add a few inches to the measurement so you will be sure to have enough. (source: pagewise.com)
Now, let's assume that you are not really artistic and good in crafts and you think this is too much work and you are not certain if it will look good too. A hand painted mural would then be the solution. How does this go?
First you would have to find a muralist who you trust and who would be experienced enough to put your ideas onto the wall. You can hire an art student who likes to fill his or her port folio. You pay him $200, the room would not be available for 1 month and you wont be sure if it will look good.
Another possibility is to hire an experienced professional muralist who can exactly duplicate your ideas and he or she will be able to do a kids room in 1-5 days (depending on the kind of design you choose). A simple design like a beach scene, sheep in a landscape or a tree in the corner with a blue cloudy sky above should be done in 1 day. Yes, in 1 day. You would spent more money but look what you get! It is worth the money and it is spent wisely.
You wont let your hair being cut by an inexperienced apprentice. I wouldn't.
The key word is "duplicate". This is the difference of a good or bad muralist. A good muralist knows not only his tools, he can communicate and is able to understand what kind of mural you like. The job is done when you are happy - not the muralist.
A mural is a very good solution and it makes rooms look better, more cozy and child friendly. They inspire children. A mural activates the child's fantasy and this is what we want: more creativity instead of computer games. I hope you could find something useful in my article.
