Americana Decorating - A Perfect, Personal Style

Are you American and love your country? Or do you long to travel to America to see all the famous sights and live the dream?
Let America come to you, with a touch of stylish Americana decorating in your home. Americana is a great style - and you can really make it into your own personal, perfect style, depending on what America means to you...
America is such a large country, with different landscapes, climates, cultures and people, that there are plenty of different inspirations and styles to choose from.
An easy place to start is with patriotic color choices - red, white and blue of course! Unless you want to go for a pretty 'full-on' look and feel, don't use primary versions of these colors in equal measures around your room. You may find it a little overpowering!
Instead, try something a little more subtle, and easy to live with. Choose muted, toned-down versions of the colors - soft, dusky or powder blue, maroons and creams are all easy to live with, and will create a relaxed, informal feel in your room, with a touch of primitive Americana and rustic styling.
This country feel is a great look for an Americana decorating style, bringing to mind the lives, homes and styles of early settlers in America - a simple, nostalgic look, with the focus on good, honest work, home and family.
There are plenty of Americana styles you can try, with a historical accent - a colonial style or a Mission (or Arts and Crafts style), or even looking at the influence of the Old West in design.
Still historical, but a little more modern in feel is the idea of a retro diner. This is a style which is seen the world over as typically American, and is an easy and excellent style to try in your kitchen.
Perhaps your idea of Americana is based in a specific region? In this case, it is easy to choose colors, pictures and accessories to evoke a style reminiscent of that place.
Does America mean the Southwest to you? With images and colors of the hot desert and Native American influences?
Or fun Florida? With colourful Miami Beach, golden sands and sparkling sea...
Perhaps you think of New York, with its distinctive art deco style? Or Hollywood and the influence of films? It would be easy to incorporate large film posters and paraphernalia to create an Americana style...
Or does it mean the jazz age to you? Or even Elvis? There are plenty of photos, posters and accessories that you can use to get the look.
The point is that whatever America and Americana means to you, there are lots of ways to create your own Americana decorating feel in your room.
Just take a little time to think what images you get when you think of America, or what associations do you make, with places, people or objects. You may end up with a colourful, fun and kitsch style, or a historically accurate, elegant and sophisticated room. It may be a smart, city-style, formal room, or a relaxing, rustic-style haven...
That, for me, is the best thing about Americana decorating - in the land of the free, the ultimate choice of decorating style and design, is completely up to you...!
